Chapter Ten

Fool’s Gold

Scarlett’s hands shook as she watched the child walking alone in the dark down an alley. The poor kid. What kind of parents let him wander alone at night in the dark? The little guy didn’t even realize he was being stalked by some kind of undead creature. She smelled a vampire nearby, but she couldn’t see him.

Scarlett came out of hiding, glancing up at the rooftops above. Where was the vamp? Attempting to slay vampires for the first time without proper training from Blade, the crusnik leader was foolish, she knew, but she couldn’t go to training sessions. Seeing the other black angels, knowing what they were, that she was one of them, was too much.

Knowing an undead being was near scared the crap out of her. Even if she’d had proper training, how could she ever be brave like the others? She wasn’t a fallen archangel, warrior angel, or any of the other types. She’d once been a mission angel, the lowest ranking category of angels. She’d been respected certainly, but she’d never been required to fight or display true courage. She’d always had the protection of the Holy Spirit and Raphael with her.

Now she was alone, alone in the dark with a demon she couldn’t see, watching her and undoubtedly stalking the poor kid for his snack.

“Are you lost, sweetie?” she asked.

The little blond-haired boy stopped walking and turned to face her. He was probably around eight or so. “No, I’m not lost. Are you?”

Scarlett approached him cautiously. “Where are your parents?”

“Gone,” he said with a blank face. “You’re one of those angels with black wings, huh?”

The question caught her off guard. Rare was the creature who could detect black angels when their wings were carefully concealed. “How did you know that?”

He shrugged. “It’s a gift. That’s what my guardian tells me. I’m Cody.”

She shook his hand, smelling the vampire much stronger now. He was getting closer. “Scarlett. You shouldn’t be out here alone. Where is your guardian?”

“He’s around here somewhere. He always watches out for me. Wanna see a trick?” He pulled a coin from his pocket. “My guardian taught me this.”

She glanced over her shoulder, growing petrified when she heard a noise but saw no one to accompany it. The child was human as far as she could tell, though the undead scent of another entity clouded her senses too much to ascertain much about the little boy.

How had he known what she was? Cody had said he had a gift, but from whom did he acquire such a talent?

“Look,” he insisted.

She looked back at him, watching the coin disappear from his hand. He got a cute little grin, seeming quite proud of himself.

“Where did it go?” She played along, feeling her knees shake.

He pulled the coin from behind her ear. “Tada.”

“Impressive.” She clapped her hands as quietly as she could. “We really need to get you home.”

“My guardian and I are on vacation.”

“Then we need to get you indoors.”

Cody pointed to her backpack on the ground.
